Driving Corolla and Carova Beach by 4x4

North of Corolla, the pavement ends and the beach becomes the road. For the next stretch of coastline there are no paved streets at all — just sand, dunes, and the 4x4 communities that live behind them, all the way to the Virginia line. Every one of our rentals comes with the Corolla beach permit already on the vehicle, so you can drive straight from our lot onto this beach.

Where the Road Ends

The transition is abrupt in the best way: one minute you’re on the highway through Corolla, the next you’re airing down at the end of the pavement and rolling onto sand. From there, the beach itself is the route north. Heading up the coast you pass Penny’s Hill — the first of the off-road communities — then Swan Beach and North Swan Beach, with Carova Beach the last community before the Virginia border. Carova has no paved roads anywhere: the streets are sand trails winding between the dunes and maritime forest, and everything moves at beach speed.

The Wild Horses

These beaches are home to the Corolla wild horses, descendants of Spanish mustangs. You may encounter them on the dunes, between the houses, or near the water while you drive. Keep your distance and give them the right of way.

What to See Along the Way

Back in Corolla itself, the red-brick Currituck Beach Lighthouse anchors the village and makes an easy stop before or after your beach run. On the sand, the beachcombing is some of the best on the Outer Banks — shells and sea glass turn over with every tide, and the northern beaches see far fewer people than the paved-access towns to the south.

Driving Notes

  • Air down before you leave the pavement and engage four-wheel drive — our beach driving tips cover the full routine
  • The Corolla beach permit is already on every vehicle we rent — nothing to buy, nothing to print
  • Recovery gear rides in every rental, so a soft patch of sand is an inconvenience, not an emergency
  • Watch your tides: the beach is wider and firmer at low tide
  • Dogs of all sizes ride free in every rental — the north beaches make a good day out for them too

The Right Vehicle for the North Beaches

Any 4x4 in our fleet handles this drive. The Jeep Wrangler is the classic open-air choice, the Gladiator adds a bed for gear, and our 8-passenger 4x4 SUVs take the whole family up the beach in one vehicle. Rates are the same across the fleet — $300 for one day up to a flat $1,338 for the week, detailed on our rental prices page.
