Nags Head’s own beach opens to 4WDs in the off-season
Most people don’t know this one: from October 1 through April 30, Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills allow beach driving for four-wheel-drive, state-inspected vehicles carrying a town permit. Driving hours run from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset, and you stay ocean-side of the sand fences and dune vegetation. The town permit is sold at Nags Head Town Hall and online — see the Town of Nags Head’s beach driving page for the current fee and maps. That permit is separate from the two that come installed on our rentals (Currituck County parking and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV permit), so off-season renters pick it up directly from the town.
The year-round beaches are 30 minutes south
In summer, Nags Head’s own sand is closed to vehicles — but Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s ORV ramps start just past Oregon Inlet, about 30 minutes from the lot, and the ORV permit is already on the vehicle. Bodie Island, Rodanthe, Avon, Cape Point, Frisco, Hatteras — the whole ladder on the map above is open territory, and the ferry puts Ocracoke in reach for a day trip.
