Rental Car vs 4x4 on the Outer Banks
If you’re pricing rental cars for an Outer Banks trip, there’s one question that changes the math: do you want to drive on the beach? Because the best parts of the OBX — the wild-horse beaches north of Corolla, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV routes, Ocracoke by ferry — are reached on sand, and a standard rental car can’t take you there.
The Fine Print Problem
It isn’t just about all-wheel drive. National rental chains prohibit beach and off-road driving in their contracts — take their SUV onto the sand and you’re on the hook for whatever happens, with no coverage. Our fleet is the opposite: beach driving is the entire point. Every vehicle is set up for sand, and every rental includes both required beach driving permits — Corolla and the Cape Hatteras ORV permit — plus recovery gear, already in the vehicle.
How It Works Instead
Drive your own car (or your regular rental) to our lot at 2101 Colington Rd in Kill Devil Hills, park it with us for free, and take a beach-ready 4x4 for the days you actually want the sand: $300 for one day, $225 per day for two, $200 per day for three to six, or a flat $1,338 for the week — every vehicle, same rates, detailed on the rental prices page. Dogs ride free, debit cards are accepted, and coolers, beach chairs, and rod racks are available.
